Will We See the Next Generation?
Make the Choice

Imagine a world with smoggy gray skies and no greenery at all. A world where roads criss-cross the continents, the rest of the space filled in with desolate city landscapes. A world with rain forests demolished, wild prairies mowed down, and snowcapped mountains sawed in half. A world where penguins and seals have gone extinct, and polar bears cease to exist. A world where Antarctica is famous for its temperate climate, and the North Pole has melted into the sea. A world where people maul one another in the streets for a single bottle of water, a single loaf of bread.
This is the world of the future if we do not halt in our tracks and look at what we are doing to Earth. This is what the next generation has to look forward to. Sound pleasant? Not really. Our problem is not just about pollution, or habitat demolition, or even excessive energy use. With global population reaching 7 billion, it's easy to guess what our problem is. There are just too many people and not enough resources to support them.
Lots of people know that the human populace is just too big, but how do we fix that problem? Putting laws in place to limit the number of children to each family will impose on people's rights, and isn't very effective at lowering the population. Take a look at China, a place where laws like that exist. If China's population stood in a line, the end wouldn’t be visible because of how fast they reproduce. So if laws won't work, what will?
It all comes down to responsibility. And no, I'm not talking about remembering to buy an eco-friendly shower head, recycle your water bottle, or even turn off the lights when you leave a room. Small things like that are nice efforts, but will not fix our problem. People just need to stop having so many children. Families with more than 5 kids has always seemed ridiculous to many, but now its essential that people get more responsible. Think about it. Would we need to worry about producing more food, cutting down more trees for more buildings, or expanding housing complexes if there wasn't a constantly growing population on our hands?
No. None of these things would be an issue if adults took more responsibility when having children. And why wouldn’t they? Why wouldn’t they acknowledge that bringing children into the world is not something to be done in their free time? Children are a gift. Whether they are a gift from above, below, or somewhere in between, they are a gift no less and should be treated like that. Respect life’s gift, for our planet, our children, and for you.
