A Life of Medicine
From what I understand about having a family, at least as someone who doesn’t have kids of his own, is that no one is ever prepared at first. Guess what happens when you add autism on top of that.
When I was born, I had severe autism. I had the worst of cases. I was immune to pain, dealt with sensory overload, non-verbal -- I had it all. For the first three years of my life, I was non-verbal, highly aggressive and self-abusive. Still, my parents never wanted me in an institution, and it was good they didn’t because they didn’t have good scientists there with treatments.
Over the years, I have had many kinds of treatments. There was physical therapy, Speech Language Pathology, and above all else, medicines. I do have some prescriptions but most of my meds are supplements. Why? Autism causes autoimmune problems. The immune system causes for the nutrients to be filtered out and the toxins become absorbed. The supplements fill the body with what has been filtered out or not absorbed. As for the toxins, chelation is sometimes necessary. All in all, we are still not sure what caused the autism but we did learn that there is usually a genetic link, autoimmune problems, and environmental factors. My mom’s side of the family has had a long history of autoimmune problems. We are not sure what the environmental problems were but we are sure that it happened while I was in my mom’s womb.
Now after years of hard research, I still take meds to keep my autism at a high functioning level. Right now, I take various supplements and a few prescriptions. I even take a medicine to help correct the functioning of my immune system. Today, I am communicative, can make friends and function normally in society. Well, almost normally.
