The Ugly Duckling
I call myself the ugly duckling. The one that always seems to stick out in the family. My whole life I have wondered, why am I the only one? The only one in the family with blonde hair and blue eyes. It's weird to me. Yes, my mom has blue eyes, but where did this blonde hair come from? Now, I know that with genetics anything can really happen. It all depends on what genes are passed along. I would imagine that redheads are the same. A lot of times the parents of redheads don't have red hair and still end up passing along that gene. So somewhere in the making of me the alleles decided that I should be blonde. :) Which I am very okay with.
Something else that really confuses me is that there is not one person in my family, not just my immediate family, but my whole family that has blonde hair like I do. It could have come from earlier generations of course but it is just crazy to think that I got that gene from generations before. My brothers and sister always used to make fun of me. Kyle would say, "Oh, mom and dad haven't told you yet...you're adopted." I would just stand there and look at him, then hit him. I never did believe him because I do have many other features that match with my parents. So I never really worried about it. I work with my sister at a restaurant and everyone there was so surprised that we were related. At first they didn't believe us, but then once they looked at our facial characteristics they saw it.
Recently my mom and I were looking up some fun facts on her phone and we came across one that said, "Every day about 22 babies are given to the wrong mom after being born." I straight out said, "Oh My God! Mom, what if I was really someone else's baby and we were switched?" She just started laughing. I could see in her eyes that she had no doubts whatsoever. I would sure hope not! She said to me "I know that you are my baby because you are so weird, like your father." Can't argue with that. At least I know that I got something other than looks from him :)
